It’s been a great summer, but now it’s time to dust off the westsuit and booties and get chillin’.
The Sunday Laser and dinghy race series resumes this Sunday, October 28, with a tune-up at the Old Dominion University Sailing Center. The center will be opened at 10 a.m., skippers’ meeting at 10:30 and racing will begin around 11 a.m. Racing will finish by 1 ro 1:30 p.m. so there is still time to catch the games or get the chores done.
Mitch Brindley, head coach at ODU, has given the green-light for the series, so there will be Lasers available for charter for competent sailors. There are eight boats, and six full rigs. Charters are done on a first come, first serve basis. Cost is $10 per regatta. I also have a spare boat at my house if we run short.
A note for newcomers: Fall and winter are beautiful times on the water, but it is going to get cold and with that, comes risk. The series annually attracts a wide range of abilities, but we ask that participants have at least fundamental skills in dinghies and proper attire for the temperatures.
The series will open (in the tradition of last year) with an away-game at Fishing Bay Yacht Club for their annual End-of-the-season Frostbite. So many of our southern bay regulars commit to that great regatta and excellent club. If you haven’t been there, it’s worth the trip and Jon Deutsch is a great host.
The series picks up again at ODU on the following Sunday, Nov. 11, and will continue through Dec. 9.
We look forward to another great year and hope everyone can make it out.
