NYCC 2020 Fall Frostbite Results

Yesterday was our final Fall Frostbite at Norfolk Yacht & Country Club, the next Series ( Winter ) starts December 6 – February 14 and the Spring Series February 21 – March 28 2021.

The Series that ended yesterday had twelve Lasers on the line, with trying conditions (wind 3-10), three races were sailed, results should be posted on NYCC’s Website shortly . Those of you that were hesitant about sailing in the Fall because of water temperature being too cold . I can attest it’s not , water might be a little chilly as I turned over backwards in 3-5 mph of wind but water not bad. I have to give credit to Alex and Wilson for running three races for us under trying conditions , Thank you – Britt

Sunday was the final day of the Laser Series and the the final event of the One Design schedule for 2020 and it was a perfectly light day to end on. The forecast all day was for nothing and it was delivering. Those who sailed Saturday had the same forecast and knew the wind came in around 1 and so we waited. Sure enough an easterly breeze of 4-7 came in and we were able to sail 5 races with 9 boats right up in Fishing Bay just off the docks.

20201108-015.jpeg

Mike Toms had a great first race – getting a lead and not letting it go. In the 2nd race James Jacob lead the fleet around the course while Britt Drake finished 2nd. In the 3rd race Mike Toms again had a great leading the fleet until the final leg where James was able to pass him. The final race was won by Jon Deutsch, who had broken a traveler fairlead in the 2nd race and was able to repair it and return to the course only missing that one race.

This was also the return of Lewis Toms who had been away from Laser racing at FBYC for some time. Alain Vincey sailed consistently and earned himself 3rd place for the day.

Thanks to our PRO Jerry Latell with help from Henry Latell, Ruthanna Jenkins, Bob Fleck & Lisa Fleck.

2020 NYCC Spring Regatta Results

Starting line on Saturday – by Scott Norman

If you weren’t theer last weekend,  you missed a good one.  Weather conditions on Saturday started off challenging to say the least.  PRO PJ and his crew did a outstanding job under trying conditions.

On shore, the club structured an environment for everyone to practice social distancing. Regatta management looked a little different because they posted all announcements online, making use of Zoom and WhatsApp to communicate updates. The large open space of the club’s parking lot and yard really allowed everyone to spread out. On the water, the regatta felt like any other Laser event – competitive and fun! Looking ahead these regattas are coming up.

The first race was started in light wind conditions,  but improved.  The next two races were sailed in steady 10 to 12 North winds.   A storm rolled through ending racing for the day. Saturday after the racing was over and boats put away there was a keg of beer for the sailors  to consume on the veranda of the Club.

Racing on Saturday as storms approached – by Scott Norman

Sunday started off with winds in the 18 to 20 mph out of the North, with gust to 25. The turnout was great with thirty six Lasers, Standard and Radials competing.
The results can be found on the Norfolk Yacht & Country Club Web site .

NYCC ,with the addition of the new Waterfront Director Scott Norman,  PJ Trudell,  Ben Stills ( Commodore)   Eddie Wolcott and others. The Club is making positive steps to returning to the Club of old.

ILCA Announces List of New Builder Applicants

From the International Laser Class Association:

As a result of antitrust actions brought in Europe, and in order to comply with EU Regulations, World Sailing now requires that any interested party that meets the necessary technical qualifications and regulatory requirements must be able to manufacture and sell the boats named as equipment for the Olympic Games. For ILCA, this World Sailing policy has required some changes in how builders are determined and approved to manufacturer class-legal equipment.

World Sailing’s Olympic Equipment Policy requires that the Olympic sailing classes have a process in place by which “any interested party who meets the necessary technical qualifications and regulatory requirements must be able to manufacture and sell Olympic equipment.” Further, the manufacturer selection process must be defined on a fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory basis.

To implement World Sailing’s policy, ILCA has now established the necessary procedures for bringing on new builders.  The primary focus throughout this process is to maintain and ensure the one-design principle that is the foundation of our class – that all boats are built to the same strict standards regardless of the manufacturer.

ILCA is pleased to announce that, under the terms of the new builder approval procedure, seven manufacturers will now be offered provisional licenses to move forward in the builder application process. The provisional approvals come after the formal builder applications were reviewed by the evaluation panel appointed by ILCA, which is comprised of both class technical representatives and independent industry experts.

The manufacturers approved to move forward in the application process are (in alphabetical order):
Devoti Sailing s.r.o. (Poland)
Element 6 Evolution Co Ltd  (Thailand)
Nautivela srl (Italy)
Ovington Boats Ltd (United Kingdom)
Qindao Zou Inter Marine Co., Ltd (China)
Rio tecna srl (Argentina)
Zim Sailing (United States)

Each builder applicant is now subject to a further technical review to ensure compliance with the established class one-design principles. The new manufacturers will now be required to obtain certified molds and tooling from ILCA and produce a number of pre-production boats to verify the ability to manufacturer boats to the strict specifications and tolerances of the building manual and the class rules. Under the terms of the Olympic Equipment Policy, there are other applicants in the approval process at this time that may also receive provisional approval. ILCA will provide further updates as this process moves forward.

ILCA: Update on New Builder Approvals

From the International Laser Class Association:

ILCA is pleased to announce that, under the terms of the new builder approval procedure, seven manufacturers will now be offered provisional licenses to move forward in the builder application process. The provisional approvals come after the formal builder applications were reviewed by the evaluation panel appointed by ILCA, which is comprised of both class technical representatives and independent industry experts.

ILCA is excited about the opportunities for growth these new manufacturers bring and will provide further updates as the approval process progresses.

2019 Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters Championship Results

High water and impassible roads couldn’t keep the Laser Masters from sailing this weekend.  Extremely high tides due to a harvest moon and a Nor’easter off the coast made Fishing Bay Road nearly impassible in 6-8+ inches of water at times. The road and Fishing Bay dock were still underwater at some of the low tides over the weekend.

LaserMastersHighWaterPostponement.JPG

On Saturday everyone arrived plenty early ahead of the mid-morning high tide and rigged and waited for the right wind.  After a 2-hour postponement the wind filled in and 36 boats filed out to get in some races in the afternoon.

The wind filled in out of the SSE for 3 races with the first being won by Gavin O’Hare (Eastport YC) and the next two won by David Waiting (Severn Sailing Association)

2019Laser-Masters-Upwind.jpg

Post racing Alain and his crew served up a scrumptious meal of She Crab Soup and Virginia BBQ Baby Back Ribs.  Dinner was cut a little short by the coming high tide and the need to get through the road before it became too flooded.

With the need for everyone to arrive early to again beat the high tide and with the better wind in the morning, the first start on Sunday was moved up to the oh-so-early time of 0930. This meant being awake and in some cases beginning to rig boats before the sun was even up.

2019-Laser-Masters-David-Waiting.jpg

David Waiting of Severn Sailing Association – photo by Paul Almany

We made the best of it starting the first race in 16 knots of wind out of the NNE. David Waiting won the first race of the day.  As the wind shifted around and eased a bit 2 more races were run with Mike Schmidt (Magothy River SA) winning one of them and Hal Gilreath who travelled all the way from Florida winning the 3rd race.  By 1pm the wind had died and the fleet was sent in for the day.

2019 Laser Masters Start - Photo by Paul Almany

Rick Klein and his race team of Mike Dale, David Hinckle, Becky Dale, Ruthana Jenkins, David Clark, Brad Miller, Mosby West, Debbie Cycotte, John Wake, Paul Almany, Sharon Bauer and a few others did a first rate job getting the fleet sailing when there was wind and off the water when there wasn’t. Every weather leg required a course change and they anticipated it every time.

Alain, James, Ron, Frank, and Don all helped in the kitchen for another marvelous meal while Britt Drake was instrumental in getting breakfast served and serving up Sunbirds as cocktail hour.

Congratulations to first time winner of the Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters Championship – David Waiting.  As an Apprentice Master David was given 3 points a race handicap and able to consistently finish in the top 3 every race to narrowly beat out Master Gavin O’Hare and Grand Master James Jacob (Severn Sailing Assn).  Top woman was Susan Taylor (Severn Sailing Assn).

2019 FBYC Laser Fall Regatta Results

Cudos to Bob (PRO) & Lisa Fleck , Mark Crews and Ruthanna Jenkins for a great Indian Summer (AKA Laser Fall) regatta.

Special thanks to Gabe  Nelson (social Chair) for sharing his secret recipe/ award winning Chili and fixings.  It capped off a fun day with hearty food and fellowship.

Impressive winds tapered to about 12 knots later in the Day.

Several Flying Scots sailed 3 up to get more weight on the rail.  Everyone in the Laser Fleet(including Adults) sailed  dial Radial Rigs.  Many demonstrated superb capsize recovery skills–with some repeat performances.

A total of 12 boats sailed (8 Laser Radials and 4 Flying Scots).

We were delighted to have four FBYC junior sailors on the course– three in Laser Radials (Race team members with their coach) and one in the Flying Scot fleet. – Ron Jenkins

Laser Radial (8 boats) (top)
Series Standing – 5 races scored

Information is final.
