D11 Sailors at Laser Nationals

District 11 had great representation at Laser Nationals this past weekend at Brant Beach Yacht Club in New Jersey.  Eighteen sailors from our district made the trip.  This year Laser Nationals was the largest Laser Regatta in North America in the history of the laser class.  Over 276 sailors were in town to take part.

The Radial fleet of 142 boats was broken into 4 divisions with two divisions racing each other at a time.  The Standard rig fleet featured 105 sailors all starting on the same line.

Friday was the first day of racing and the wind was blowing between 14 and 18 mph with max gusts observed at 22mph.  The frist warning was at 11am and all fleets got in 4 races on the 5 mile course.  The bay we were sailing in is rather shallow and somewhat well-protected so there was only a little chop.

Saturday the wind was a little weaker, but still over 10mph all day.  All fleets got in another 4 races.

Sunday morning sailors awoke to rainy conditions with little wind so racing was postponed 30 minutes while a front moved through.  Once on the water the rain cleared and the Standard Rig fleet was started.  Halfway up the beat the wind died and the race was abandoned.  About 45 minutes later the wind finally filled and all fleets got in one final race.

US Nationals Registration

US Nationals are being held at Brant Beach Yacht Club in New Jersey this year.  The regatta will be held August 7-9.

Got Grand Prix Points?

What is the Grand Prix System?
The Grand Prix system is used by the North American Laser Class Association to award points to sailors for attending championship events.  These events range from District Championships to North Americans and are awarded separately for both standard rigs, radials and 4.7s.  The NA-ILCA then ranks sailors based on points earned and uses this to award berths to International Events, Olympic Qualifiers, etc.

How does the scoring system work?
For each Grand Prix event awards points on a high point scale.  The number of points available is determined based on the size of the event.  The winner of the event gets the maximum points available.  Then each subsequent finisher gets one less point than the person before them until we reach zero.  So in the North American Championship where 40 points are available, the winner gets 40, the 40th finisher gets 1 points, and everyone 1-40 gets something in between.

The North American Laser class publishes the Grand Prix rules at the beginning of each year.  These rules can be found here.

When/Where are these Grand Prix Events?
District 11 Sailors have a great opportunity to earn Grand Prix points this year because we have a number of major Grand Prix events in our district or just a short drive away.

May 2-3 Standard Atlantic Coast Championship – Annapolis MD – 25 points
June 6-7 Radial Atlantic Coast Championship – Annapolis MD – 25 points
June 20-21 District 10 Championship – Lavallette NJ – 20 points
August 7-9 US National Championship – Brant Beach NJ – 30 points
September 12-13 District 11 Championship – Galesville MD – 20 points

District Sailors Compete at Nationals & Youth Worlds

This past weekend several of our District 11-area sailors were in Colchester Vermont for the US National Championship. Mike Schmidt and Ted Morgan competed in the full rig fleet while Kim Couranz and Jane Schmidt competed in the radial fleet.

Bo McClatchy of Annapolis was in The Hague Netherlands competing in the Radial Youth World Championship and finished 68th in the Gold Fleet.

Magic Marine

More thanks to Luke at Severn Sailing Association for rounding up all kinds of dinghy sailing gear by Magic Marine. He handed out a steady flow of boots, jackets, sailing shorts, hiking pants and gloves. The hiking pants were ideal for the Atlantic Ocean conditions at the US Nationals on the southern coast of North Carolina. That was some regatta. It was kinda fun grinding out the trapezoids.
